Do you have a recipe to share???

Does anyone out there have a recipe for corn pudding? I had some at a buffet the other day but could not find the person who made it. What a great dish!

It was baked in a large glass pan and placed in a flat basket and served with a spoon. It was pretty solid-did not run off the spoon. It had a sweet taste. Yummy! Any ideas? Please share.

allrecipes Magazine

I subscribe to several magazines since I write for two publications myself. I like to keep up with what is happening especially with regard to my two favorite topics-food and nutrition, and total lifestyle issues.

One of the magazines I take is called “allrecipes” and it is really interesting. For example, in a recent issue I found five really fabulous tuna recipes. Sure, I get out that old can of tuna at every opportunity. It is perhaps a holdover from my college “tuna and noodles” days, but I just love canned tuna. How about:

  1. Asian tuna burgers
  2.  Updated tuna melts
  3. Southwest tuna noodle casserole
  4. Tuna Alfredo
  5. Tuna Ramen Salad (Yummy!)

Any of these recipes would work with canned salmon too.

Also featured are themed menus, table settings, easy winter soups, and on and on. Next time you are at the grocery store, look for this magazine on the rack and try it.

Beautiful things make a beautiful you!

Go Bold-Do not be afraid to mix it up.

The flower is actually a napkin ring, the grapes are rubber, and the Rosemary plant is real. The lemons are plastic, and the pine cone came from my back yard.

The woven basket was purchased at a thrift shop for 50 cents!

This arrangement looks lovely as a centerpiece on my kitchen table.

These matching arrangements are made up of carnations and artificial ivy. The vases are flea mrket finds at $1.00 each.

Thrift stores are wonderful sources for vases, especially clear glass vases. I like to mix and match real and artificial flowers and plants. It seems to make the fresh flowers go further and last longer. That is a Martha Stewart tip, BTY.

Don’t be afraid of grocery store flowers, but remember to be careful about freshness. Ask when flowers are delivered, and be sure the bouquet you select has had its stems fully immersed  in the water.

Pewter goes with anything. This is an antique pitcher and a matching (sort of) mug. I often put a high flower arrangement in the pitcher and a colorful/matching napkin in the mug.

The base of this arrangement is a lid from a casserole dish. Artificial ivy covers many things. For February I switch out the candle for a bright red one.

An old milk jug holds both live and artificial flowers and a wooden mitten covered with a felt cutout and some glued on buttons. I love to collect and reuse old buttons. They seem to add just the right touch to arrangements. Threaded and layered, they make napkin rings that are totally unusual! Put some red in this arrangement and it is good to go for January and add some red felt cut out hearts and you are on top for February as well!!

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I just read a tip in Hints from Heloise about sleeplessness and I wanted to add a couple of things that I just found in one of my PREVENTION magazines, and a few tips of my own. BTY, over 70% of people suffer sleeplessness at least two nights a week.

Heloise mentions sleeping in a cool room and that is a good tip. I might add to that the importance of wearing nightwear in which you are comfortable. Don’t get tangled up in your nightgown or have the waist be too tight on your PJ bottoms-that type of thing. Also, don’t use covers that are too heavy. Look at total comfort-mattress, sleepwear, bedding, etc. Be sure you are not uncomfortable in any way.

They say keep away from screens for at least an hour before bed time and that is good advice. I like to read a magazine. I am a BIG magazine fan. I read and have a cup of decaff tea before bed.

If you are worried, in a high stress situation, or you are what I call carrying the day’s burdens around with you try saying a prayer when you get into bed. If you do not pray regularly, give it a try. It can really free up your feelings of anxiety and let you relax. If you chose not to pray, try 5 minutes of yoga/meditation or soft music. DO NOT review the days events in your mind or you will tend to do it over and over!

Finally, try to visualize yourself as being asleep. Just think of the word sleep as you close your eyes and breathe deeply. Even count out your breaths as you inhale and exhale.

Try some of these tips, and let me know how it works.

Quote from Mr. Rogers

Fred Rogers, yes the old Mr. Rogers Neighborhood Children’s TV show host, was a big hero of mine. I have many of the over 40 children’s books he wrote and a also a book of his writings and quotes. I frequently use them in things I write and say. This morning I liked:

“Peace means far more than the opposite of war,”     Fred Rogers

I ask you this morning to give this some thought. think about peace of mind, inner peace, freedom from fear, and even YOU sitting having a quiet moment in the tub, perhaps meditating for five minutes alone in a room with a lit candle, or my personal favorite when my kids were little: Going into the bathroom, closing the door, turning off the light, and taking 3 deep breaths. As a young mom, sometimes you get desperate, right?

Have a blessed day-Love, Judith

Now That’s a Really Good Question!

The other day a reader asked me why articles and nutritionists, and even Doctors keep recommending different things and often even totally revising or completely change recommendations. Well, the answer is that there is always new science in the nutrition and health areas just as anywhere else in fields where there is ongoing research.

The other thing I must say about this is that YOU may also be changing due to such factors as age, health, weight gain or loss, emotional condition etc. My advice is to keep reading and asking, of course, but also take care of/protect yourself. Don’t keep taking a medication just because it was prescribed five years ago. Let your Dr. know about any changes you may have so that he/she can better do their job. The same with side effects too. Watch it!

Do the same with foods. Watch fad diets or nutrition advice that does not seem right to you. Try something new, yes, but if anything disagrees with you stop at once. Allergies, believe it or not, may come and go. Be aware that you may eat something that has not bothered you before but may hit you big time out of the blue. Also you may have been allergic to something in the past that no longer bothers you.

Be very aware of your own mental and physical health. No one knows YOU like YOU and no one can read your mind. Watch it, and speak up!

And the winner is????

Ads for diet products are fast becoming as rampant on TV as almost anything. Honestly, Marie Osmond did good to loose all of that weight and I am happy for Jillian Michaels and all of those other skinny PELETON people, but would you like to know who is actually the best? Well, this is not an ad or an endorsement by any means, but the winner for the sixth year in a row is Jenny Craig. Don’t ask me why but I actually read that on a very reliable web site. By a large number of criteria, Jenny Craig was pronounced the best weight loss plan to use. So There!

September Resolutions-Not January! (PINK Magazine, Sept. 2017)

“New Year’s Resolutions in January are so over done. Let’s start the real New Year, the School New Year” right with some REAL resolutions!”

The Uphill Skater

Everyone makes those same old same old resolutions every year and we have talked about this before, dear friends. Don’t say you will call your mother, write thank you notes, and lose 20 pounds EVER again. Promise me? As school starts, let us pretend that this new start for so many young people can actually be a new start for us too. It is never too late to be early-Okay, that is not as silly as it seems. How many times have you driven past a house with the Christmas lights up in May and laughed and said that they must be early? Have you ever not gotten to breakfast until it became brunch? When you party until 2:00 getting up at 11:00 is early-right???

All right, what can we healthy life style people actually do in September, that lovely Fall/Autumn time of the year that simply begs a different start? Stay tuned for three excellent (If I say so myself.) suggestions.

Every study I have read in the last I don’t know how many years has said that taking a class is good for your mind, heart, soul, health etc….In other words you should actually DO it. Keep your mind active as well as your body. Sure, do a jig saw or a cross word puzzle, but much better is some kind of a class where you actually interact with other people. The local Community College near me just sent out s brochure with classes ranging from Italian to ballroom dancing and tons of other lectures on a variety of subjects in between. Local high schools frequently offer evening classes, libraries and Senior Centers offer bridge, quilting, and in my local, they even offer tap dancing. Personally I love yoga so that is my fit. If you don’t want to go out or meet anyone new, take an on-line class. I recently learned to play Canasta. Okay, it is not neurosurgery, but it was quite a lot of fun.

Next, and yes, this is a repeat, move around a bit more. As I said, I do yoga and sometimes in a class, but more often, on the floor in my bedroom. I have a little TV on my dresser and I use DVD yoga classes and I am usually in my PJ’s. Walk, swim, go to any type of class or just clean house. House cleaning burns 100 calories every one half hour! Exercise classes and groups are everywhere mentioned above and even more places. You trip over them if you are not careful. I once did Silver Sneakers at a yacht club. It was taught by someone’s granddaughter who was visiting for the summer. We had a ball. Just be sure you don’t go out for lunch and ice cream after every class and don’t ask me how I know people do that.

Finally, I challenge you to do anything new. Yes, that is pretty broad, but think about it. Try a new food. Buy a new piece of clothing or (yes!) new shoes. Walk a new direction. Call an old friend or a new one. Go to a different church just once for a different take on your Sunday morning. Go to a movie you think you might not like. If you cook, try a new recipe. Just this week I went to a Farmer’s Market and picked my own blue berries and peaches and made a really wonderful ice cream topping. Paint a wall or wall paper an area. Refinish anything that is not moving around. Buy and read a new magazine. Read a book and share it with someone. Plant some bulbs. Make a pretty flower arrangement for your table. Yes, you can use grocery store flowers bought while you are shopping for that new recipe you are going to try. I could go on and on, but you get the idea. Just try it once and see what happens. Let me know-go to www.skatinguphill.com and I will post your comments on the blog.

Finally, here is something I will really use to give you a challenge. Patch up an old quarrel. This is a tough one and I have had it on my heart to do it this month and I will make a real effort so I feel I can challenge you. Sit down and really thing and pray over what may have caused the estrangement in the first place and decide if that cause was really worth the pain. Someone smarter than me once said that hating someone is like you taking poison and expecting THEM to get sick. Bad feelings are toxic. Resolve something and feel better.

Try all of this and share results. Life is so valuable and precious. Health, both mental and physical, is of the utmost importance. If you don’t believe me, just ask someone who has neither.   Love, Judith
