Random thoughts I felt were worthy of passing along

In Training-Get it?

We are , in fact, always in some kind of training. We may be trying yoga for the first time, learning a new healthy eating plan, or even taking a pottery class. Here are a few life tips for whatever you may be doing with your day today.

  1. Always remember to stretch before and after you do any kind of exercise.
  2. Try your best not to snack. Grab an apple if you just MUST have something.
  3. Eat your 5 servings of fruits and veg. daily. It is not that hard. A serving is only 1/2 cup.
  4. Try Quinoa or some other different food.
  5. Read a magazine you have not read before. I like to recommend “Real Simple” or if you are an HGTV fan you might try their mag. or the “Magnolia Journal.”
  6. Try to actively fight a bad habit.
  7. Make a list of NOT meals or calories, but rather of foods you like to eat that are healthy and then try to keep to these foods. After all, you just said you LIKE them.
  8. Evaluate yourself-Daily if you need to, but on a regular basis. No one knows YOU like you!

OK, so you hate other people’s tips-I get that. Just pick one and try it. Maybe you will go on to get on board the “Train.” Let me know how it goes.

Ok, so life just gave you some lemons

I love that old saying that when life gives you lemons you should make lemonade, but we here at “Skating Uphill” like to think out of the box. When life gives you lemons, first of all, jump up and shout “Lucky Me!” Then you can:
  1. Make lemonade and make lemonade ice cubes to put in tea
  2. Make a lemon merengue pie
  3. Use squirts of lemon on vegetables or fruits
  4. Saute fish with lemon and white wine
  5. Make lemon bars
  6. Put lemon peel down your garbage disposal to clean and refresh
  7. Rub lemon and or peel on your hands to kill the odor of fish or anything else you have been working with
  8. Use lemons in any kind of fruit bowl display to add big color
  9. Make lemon curd and bake it in those little puff pastry cups
  10. Make an easy pie with a graham cracker crust, a tub of Cool Whip, a package of lemon pudding, and 1/4 cup of squeezed lemon made boiling hot in the microwave with a package of lemon jello added to it and disolved. (I use Jello instant pudding and add 2 cups of really cold milk then stir for 2 minutes.) Combine all and pour into the pie shell. Put this in the fridge for at least 2 hours. It is lo-cal and really yummy.

See, being given lemons is not so bad really, is it? And if you do not want the lemon and you do not want to do any of these things, give the lemon back!!

Just A Thought

I love getting cards and letters in the mail. Do you? Well, this is the best way to assure that you will be receiving messages from friends and relatives-Send some out yourself. I have been doing this as part of a New Year’s Resolution I made several years ago and it has worked so beautifully. I get at least two cards, letters, yes, and even a post card or two each week.
Bring some joy to your day by putting some joy out there for someone else!!

Beautiful surroundings are good for your soul. Create lovely things in your home. Perhaps make it a bit of a hobby and give yourself a budget. I think you will find that you can do a lot with very little $$$$. In fact, you might make that a challenge. I wish you beauty!

“Nothing Days”

There is no such thing as a “Nothing Day”

I guess that I am not one of those people who think that life is short. Life is what you want it to be, within reason of course. Get up in the morning and look the day that you have been given right in the eye and make the best of it that you possibly can. If poor old Winnie The Pooh can make a fun day for his friends, surely you can do something along those lines, right? He declared an Arts and Crafts Day in the Hundred Acre Woods and all of his friends made something to share and then had lunch together.

Why don’t you declare it ……………….Day at your house and make it happen. Need ideas?

  1. Popcorn and a movie
  2. Let’s work in the yard
  3. Take the dog for a walk
  4. Eat something different
  5. Go out and buy something (New top, plant, flowers, a cake mix, a puzzle, a book, etc…)
  6. Call a friend
  7. Clean a shelf
  8. Re-org something that looks really bad
  9. Do something to your hair
  10. Learn something new

BTW at the “nothing at all to do” time, I play a computer card game or read a book. I love both of these things. Also, I read an article recently about how to start to HGTV type decore your space and they suggested the first thing to do when you want a new look is to Shop Your House. Yes, this is really fun!!

Togetherness

It is pretty common knowledge that having someone with which to share life experiences is good not only for your well being, but also for your health. In fact, some say that health and well being are close to the same thing. In the case of having a friend, loved one, special other and on and on, I agree. Being lonely is no fun. Don’t ask me how I know this! I am not there any more, but I have been. Have you?

Shared Wisdom

If you are living a “goal focused” life, then no matter what you do, you never have enough.

Not so with a “value focused” life because your values are always available to you no matter what your circumstance.

I’m Just Saying!

Personal favorite

Winnie the pooh is one of my favorite characters. He has such a positive self-image. He loves and is kind to his friends. He put up with rabbits who are occasionally grumpy. He has a “Love Thy neighbor” outlook on life that is hard to beat. He works within his limitations-Even though he is referred to as a bear with little brain, he is never held back by that definition. He doesn’t hesitate to seek help when necessary. He is pretty game to try new things. Finally, and above all, he is lovable. A guy like that is hard to find these days. (I’m Just Saying!)

Quit Horsing Around!

When you think about the new trend of using different and, dare I say fancier, vocabulary words to describe the same exact thing, it often seems a bit phony. I would generally agree with that with few exceptions. One of those exceptions is the use of the words “healthy eating plan” instead of diet. A diet has a beginning and an end and any food restrictive program that has a start and a finish is doomed.

A plan for aiding you to a healthier life style is one with food modifications and long term goals and not based on such immediate results as things like weighing every morning and whether or not you have to lie on the bed on your back to zip up your jeans. Diets like Keto, Atkins, South Beach and so on are what I call restrictive. Certain foods are promoted and certain foods are banned.

A genuine healthy eating plan is the Mediterranean model that advocates real lifestyle changes and offers a huge variety of healthy foods. I will discuss this more in future posts. I have started about 3 weeks ago to modify my eating habits and so far I love the changes I see in my fitness level. Stay Tuned and get ready to commit and quit horsing around!!
